Overview: The biggest trends in telecom today are software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV). SDN is defined as the abstraction of the switching layer of the network; NFV is tasked with virtualizing functions previously carried out by proprietary, dedicated hardware required to launch and operate services. SDN and NFV are hot buzzwords because they promise new, more flexible business models, higher revenue, greater network efficiency and control, and lower capex and opex. SDN-controlled networks with NFV also make multi-vendor implementations possible by providing a vendor-agnostic link between the control and data planes and creating a centralized control plane, or orchestrator, removing the single vendor lock-in common in today's service provider networks.
